Just northwest of Wilmington Delaware is one of the many outcomes of the duPont family fortune: Winterthur Museum and Mansion.
It's about as close as you can get to a castle here in the US. Absolutely huge country estate. It started off as a reasonable sized house, but over the years Henry Francis du Pont just kept adding on and expanding... until it had 175 rooms! Yep, you read that right - 175 rooms. One hundred and seventy five. Yeah, you could say he went a little overboard, especially since it was mostly filled with staff members who kept the place in order. But then again, I guess that's ok because it provided jobs... Anywho...
We took a family trip over there recently and I thought I'd share a handful of pictures from it. First up, we had some fun in the Enchanted Woods!
Here's my daughter showing off her balance:
There's a "faerie cottage" that the kids played in - I'm not quite sure why it's not spelled "fairy" though. Anyway, they liked it:
The water pump was a hit with both kids:
The best part of it was if you put your hand in it, it appears to turn green! My son really loved that:
Being a kid-garden, the benches were just the right size:
Here they are - the 3 stooges!
Inside the mansion we did a quick family-friendly tour. I thought this staircase was pretty sweet:
In one of the halls was this table with flowers on top of it. The whole mansion is filled with antique American furniture. It's incredible really - everywhere you look are original, rare pieces of furniture which I'm sure are each worth a very large sum of money.
And that concludes our little family trip over to the local enormous mansion. We'll have to take a trip back there again so we can tour other parts of the house. Till next time, go outside and snap some pictures!
